Life changing events

THERE ARE MANY, I ONLY SHARE 3 OF THEM

2007 secterian war

That scream that I heard when I was trying to build a Lego house still rings in my head. Not a single one of us could take the news that my cousin, who was only 20 years old, was kidnapped and murdered. A tragic event that could be defined as the worst time of my life.
I remember in that year, I have seen things that not a single child should have ever seen. I have seen tens of dead bodies who were killed by militias and thrown out on the sidewalk. I have seen dogs eating dead bodies. I have seen slaughtered bodies. I have seen bombs exploding in front of my eyes. I saw blood at every single corner. But nothing was more damaging than having my cousin murdered.
At that time, one could easily think of giving up on life. In fact, life and death were no different at that point. But you know what we did? We went on with our lives, we ignored all the danger, took every single risk to go to school, put everything behind and worked for a better future.
IT MIGHT SEEM IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE UNDER SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES, BUT BELIEVE ME, IT’S AMAZING HOW HUMANS CAN ADAPT TO THE WORST SITUATIONS NO MATTER WHAT.

2014 SWBaghdad

April 17, 2014 was the last time I visited mosul. It was not that shiny, but nothing seemed abnormal. Surprisingly, only two months after that visit, ISIS took over the whole city and continued working on their plan which included occupying as much land as possible.
A week later, my family decided to leave Baghdad since it was under the threat of ISIS and go to Kurdistan to keep us safe there. Sadly, it was one of the worst experiences in my life.
At that time, I was assigned to be the lead organizer of Startup Weekend Baghdad. An event that I do not just admire, but spend every single second to make it great. Being forced to live away from Baghdad slowed down the process of organizing the event and made it way difficult than usual. My nightmare was not being able to go back to Baghdad at least a few weeks before the event.
I lived in Kurdistan for a month and a half and it was a continuous cycle of depression. But thankfully, beside all the odds, my team and I pulled it off to have one of the best events in Startup Weekend history.

Watson University

So far, I have mentioned two bad experiences. However, I just want you to know that my identity was not just shaped by bad experiences, but the good ones as well.
One of the most impactful experiences in my life was being fortunate enough to join Watson University. It was October 2015, when a friend of mine texted me with a link to a program organized by Watson University. At first, I was like I know nothing about those guys. But then, I decided to give it a shot and apply after sending a million email to the VP of the program.
A month later, I was surprised to learn that Watson has generously offered me a scholarship that covers all the program’s fees. I couldn’t say no, I applied for the U.S. visa with zero expectations to get it approved but so magically, it was approved!
I can’t describe how impactful the experience was. I was blessed to live for 4 months in Boulder, Colorado and meet some of the most impactful people on planet earth who cared nothing about talking but all about action. Watson University impacted the way I feel, think and behave about every single situation I face in this life.
